Once Upon a Marquess by Courtney Milan (The Worth Saga #1)

Egalley thanks to the author

Synopsis from Goodreads
The last man Judith Worth wants to see again is Christian Trent, the Marquess of Ashford—the man who spent summers at her family home, who kissed her one magical night…and then heartlessly ruined her father. But when a tricky business matter arises, he’s the only one she can ask for help. With any luck, he’ll engage a servant to take care of the matter, and she won’t even have to talk with him.

But Ashford has never forgotten Judith. He knows she will never forgive him for what he’s done, but when offered the chance to assist her, he arrives in person. His memory of Judith may have haunted him, but it pales in comparison to the reality of the vivacious, beautiful woman he rediscovers. Throughout his life, he has always done what is correct. But now, he finds himself doing something utterly wrong…falling in love with the one woman he can never have.

If like me you are a fan of Courtney Milan, you share my pain of waiting so long for this book. The release date kept changing and changing until we all lost our desire to live. But fear not! It's finally here and it's absolutely delightful.

Christian Ashford has been in love with Lady Judith since forever, and if not for him accidentally finding the evidence of her father and brother committing treason and being unable to cover it up, he would have scooped her up and lived happily ever after.

None of this happened because Christian is quite unable to tell falsehoods and walk away from any sort of a mess without straightening it up. It sounds like he was born with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder, but of course the diagnosis never comes up, so my guess is just a guess.

Years later, Judith's father is dead, her brother is most probably perished at sea while being transported, and she is on her own trying to fend for her younger siblings, a score of cats and an estranged sister. None of this is easy, but she knows that if she didn't stop being a lady to survive, she would never have known what wonderful things she could have been capable of.

When circumstances force her to ask Christian for help, the chemistry springs up as soon as these two lay their eyes on each other. It's funny, heartbreaking and intense. These two, my dear readers, dig each other. They understand each other on such intimate level that it's clear they have been meant for each other from the very start, and it's a damn tragedy the circumstances separated them.

Christian desperately wants Judith back, and she desperately tries not to cave in. He betrayed her family, and what if this happens again? She is unable to trust the man again no matter how much she is in love.

Oh, the conundrum! Milan as usual is exquisite. The banter is to die for, quirky and funny. Both Christian's and Judith's family are warm, supporting and very much alive. They are not props but active participants of the story, while it takes awhile for the main characters to find a way to reconcile their natures and the reality. Still, it's sweet and gorgeous, and I as always don't hesitate to recommend it to everyone. Read it!
